I forgot to make a log of this game - but turns out my opponent did!

So I made a new recording based on that.

Vassal OP, Q2 2021, Unconventional Warfare


Announcing the next Vassal OP event: Q2 2021 Unconventional Warfare.

This time we've been inspired by AMG's Unconventional Warfare event from May.

Short version: build your fleet a certain way and gain access to perks (they are quite potent). For every battle you fight, another perk is unlocked. Catch: you don't know what the future perks are until they are unlocked!

Format

Type: Swiss

Rounds: 4

Time zones: 2 (EURO and NA - if there are enough players)

Schedule: Round 1 starts Monday, 17th May. 1-week rounds.

Rules and stuff

List building restrictions: Uses standard FFG/AMG fleet building but with an extra set of restrictions.

Errata: Hondo is unaligned (for funises), Moralo is Separatist (nerf).

Update for VASSAL OP H1 2021 Team league


Got some updates for the Team league:

  • AMG spoiled a bunch of commanders and officers yesterday. They are already in the module (4.3.5) 😇 We are still missing 1 commander, all the titles (except Invisible Hand), and some other upgrades. I'm hoping for some release articles soon and maybe we will get the actual products soon too?
  • I've updated the rules errata section and posted a preliminary version of points changes/upgrade slot tweaks (as 4 pdf documents).
    • The actual rules changes are relatively minor and intuitive, dealing with stuff like:
      • Assault and strategic keywords
      • Huge ships
      • New obstacle types
      • Proximity mines
      • A handful of cards also get a direct errata
    • There will be a separate Warlords clone (pretty much ready, just waiting for the rest of wave 10) to handle the points changes and stuff so that won't be a problem.
    • The one thing that you do need to give special attention to is the objective tweaks. Most of them are minor but together they create a lot of new opportunities for fleet building. 
  • There will be some "special challenges" that allow players to score extra points towards the Grand Championship.

AMG revealed 12 new cards from wave 10 during yesterday's mini-stravaganza: 4 new commanders and 8 officers. There is no reason to think we'll be getting any more cards revealed now. So no titles or other juicy stuff. That's unfortunate but the 12 new cards should give the CW factions a lot of new options.

Armada Warlords has been updated with the latest spoilers so go build a winning list! 


A very Thrawn-like commander, only potentially even more flexible and powerful!


Have that Venator toss 7 (or 8) squads with a single squadron command. Ouch.


All ships start with shields. So you WILL GET extra dice. Then maybe hope he dies in round 5 or something 😅


Prediction: Plo Koon ARCs will be a thing.


Relieve pressure on that 1 redirect you have. Or redirect even when you don't have the luxury of redirecting. Cheap and decent.


Snipe is never wrong. Mass snipe is even better.


Great flexibility. Fun fact: he comes in the Pelta pack 😅


Assault is a thing now. Pretty good with those ARCs actually. Prediction: GAR will get the LAAT with printed Assault in their squadrons II pack.


Fro rounds 4-6 you will get an extra command dial of your choice. Pretty powerful in the endgame.


And yes he works with Hyperwave to increase the number you can activate.

If you use him, Tikkes limits your command choices by a lot. But note the "may" so you CAN break the cycle. But on a ship that wants to spam 1 command, he's pretty neat.

Armada 4.3.5 was built using Vassal 3.5.3. It should be compatible with module versions 4.0.0+ and Vassal 3.4.11+ but ALWAYS update to the most recent versions of both!

Deadline update for 1-day Swiss Event (Sunday, 21st March)

I'm altering the deal!

Got a tip from Biggs (famous for the Vassal World Cup - and his mustache) over at steelstrategy.com that Atomic Mass Games has announced a 3-day "AMG Mini-stravaganza" where they will reveal new stuff.

Hoping more wave 10 cards will get spoiled. If so they will be legal for the tournament. That's why I'm pushing back the signup deadline to Friday and the final fleet submission deadline to just 30 mins before the tournament!

In layman's terms: You have to sign up for the event by next Friday. I need a little time to enter all the players into the TTT event (and update Vassal). If you have your list ready by then, please submit it. If you want to wait, that's fine too. It's also fine to make some last-minute tweak and resubmit. I'll be using the latest version submitted.

Armada Warlords will oc update ASAP. You can also manually edit your lists. Just make sure they are legal. 😏

Rebellion in the Rim pt. 3 (Round 2)

Things are getting interesting. Let's dive into turn 2 of RitR!

The Fleets

We needed more squadrons, so we got more squadrons. I won, so 2 Ints and 1 TIE for me. My fellows could afford no more than 1 Int each. Ouch. Double ouch when you see the potato + squads list taking another X-wing and a Scurrg. It's a legit fleet. The best of all 3 rebel task forces. But it's already at 111 pts of squads. None of my fellow commanders can handle that. So what do we do? We send my fleet and use the ally token and hope for the best. The rest of the rebels also got more squads but they aren't as extreme.

Vassal OP, Q1 2021, 1-day Swiss Event (Sunday, 21st March)

It's time to find out who is the ultimate Vassal Armada 3-round Swiss Champion!

Format

For this 1-day event, there is a single Swiss group across all time zones!

  • Standard 400-points
  • 3 round Swiss
  • Each Swiss round runs for 2h 15min and then ends IMMEDIATELY.
    • You CANNOT start a new round if the timer has passed the 2h mark.
    • The current round is NOT played to completion when the time is called. Finish the current activation (ship or squadron), then hard stop and tally the score.
    • Report the result to the TO in the appropriate tourney channel or as a PM (Green Knight#5600) on Discord so pairings for the next round can be done in a timely fashion.

Vassal OP, 1st Half 2021, Team league

The time has come to sign up for our first Vassal league, the aptly named "Vassal OP, 1st Half 2021, Team league." 😅

FORMAT

In a "Team league" players are grouped into teams. 

  • Each team picks a single faction (Empire, Rebel, Republic, or Separatist).
  • 3 players per team.
  • 4 rounds of games.
  • Each round teams are paired by the TO (randomly, it's NOT Swiss). Each player is then (randomly) paired against a player from the opposing team.
  • The team with the most combined tourney points (across both sectors) after those 4 rounds is the winner!

To keep scheduling manageable I'll break the teams into two sectors (if we have enough teams, that is):

  • EURO: You want to play at times convenient for GMT/CET zones.
  • NA: You want to play at times convenient for North American zones.

Note: There needs to be an even number of teams or there will be pairing problems. Handing out team byes isn't an option. If this becomes an issue I'll sort it out then and there.

SCHEDULE

We'll start as soon as wave 10 has been fully spoiled and added to the Vassal module. 

Hopefully, that'll be very soon, during the AMG Mini-stravaganza 18-20 March! Looking at the schedule for those 3 days I don't think we'll get wave 10 spoils. Will have to wait for the release articles.

  • Rounds will be 7-10 days long. Or put another way: 1 week + an extension if needed to make things work.
  • If a player can't play his game within the allotted time period one of his teammates must sub in. Only use this as a last resort!

SIGNUP

Players can either sign up as fully formed teams or as individuals. Use this form.

  • Players who sign up as part of a team are guaranteed to be part of that team.
  • Individuals will be randomly assigned to teams, taking into account player wishes and time zones as much as possible.
Does this mean good players can band together and have a greater chance of winning? Absolutely. One of the many joys of team sports! 

In either case, you'll be asked to provide a faction. For players entering as individuals, I can't guarantee 100% you'll get your preferred faction. If this comes up we'll discuss it individually.

FLEETBUILDING RESTRICTIONS

  • Your team's faction is your faction!
  • Uniques are unique WITHIN THE FACTION. 
  • Objectives are also considered unique in this regard. For example, if one player picks Asteroid Tactics, none of his teammates can take that objective in their fleets.

FLEET-BUILDER SUPPORT

Some cards have had their cost adjusted or have added/removed upgrade card slots. We're also using previewed ship and upgrade cards that haven't found their way into all the fleet builders.

There are three ways to go about solving this challenge:

  • Build lists by hand. Just get a spreadsheet, enter your cards and their costs, and have the sheet calculate the total points.
  • Use one of the main list builders to provide the framework, export it, then adjust the final details by hand.
  • Use a Warlords clone that has been updated with the new costs/upgrade tweaks by clicking here.

VASSAL OP 2021 GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

It's the team result that determines points for the Grand Championship.

  • Entry: 1
  • Completion: 1
  • Top 4: 1 (depends on the number of teams, could be top 8)
  • Runner-up: 1
  • Winner: 2

Special challenges that can earn players extra points (1 pt each, max 2 pts per player):

  • Far Superior To Droids: Republic challenge. Clone only. Only Clone ships, non-Adept squads, and non-Jedi upgrades (it's obvious who they are).
  • Han's Dice: Unaligned challenge. No dice modification or adding dice to the attack pool. You may INCLUDE cards with modifications but you can't use them (so swarm squadrons are ok but they can't use swarm).
  • Going Commando: Unaligned challenge. Running a squadronless fleet.
  • Rebellions Are Built On Hope: Rebel challenge. No A-wings, CR90A, or MC30 Torpedo allowed. Post-Endor cards not allowed.
  • Roger, Roger: Separatist challenge. No Hardcells, only non-unique droid squadrons, and droid upgrades allowed ((it should be obvious which they are).
  • There Can Be Only One: Unaligned challenge. Only 1 copy of any given card in the fleet and max 1 upgrade per ship.
  • We Don't Need Their Scum: Empire challenge. Only "Star Destroyer" ships allowed. No rogue squadrons allowed. Post-Endor cards not allowed.

ERRATA

The following errata is in effect for this specific event.

The errata aims to increase the fun factor, increase the variety of ships and squadrons on the table, and put CW and GCW factions on a level field. 

Most of the objectives have gotten small tweaks, so make sure you check out that part in particular!
